Where the Irish actually buy.

Irish buyers made 1,186 Spanish property purchases in the first half of 2024, up 12.4% on the year before, and no Spanish coast pulls more of them than this one. That is not an accident. Direct flights from Dublin, Cork, Shannon and Knock land at Málaga year-round, and two generations of Irish owners have built something that matters more than sunshine: community.

Fuengirola and Los Boliches: the heartland

If there is an Irish capital on the coast, it is Los Boliches. The bars function as noticeboards, the GAA results get watched, and a newcomer knows people within a fortnight. Our Fuengirola guide covers the pockets and prices. The practical draw is the same as ever: flat, walkable, on the train line, alive in January.

La Cala de Mijas and the golf belt

The younger Irish money has drifted ten minutes west to La Cala and the Mijas golf valley: newer builds, a walkable village core, and Gaelic games on the coast within reach. Buyers here skew working-age, half-remote, and more likely to let the property when they are not using it.

Benalmádena, Torremolinos and the value line

Plenty of Irish ownership sits quietly along the train line through Benalmádena and Torremolinos, where the airport run is shortest and the letting sums work hardest. These are the towns for owners who visit often and rent the gaps.

Marbella and the aspiration end

Irish buyers are present at every price on the coast, and the Marbella-Estepona stretch takes the bigger budgets. The community feel is thinner and more international; people buy the lifestyle rather than the parish. Both are valid: they are just different purchases.

Why community should shape the decision

Because the property is the easy part. The owners who are still delighted ten years in are almost always the ones who bought into a life: neighbours, a local, a routine, help when something breaks. If that matters to you, weight it as heavily as the sea view, and buy where the community already is. If independence and quiet are the goal, the east coast makes the better case, and we wrote about that too.
