Retiring to the Costa del Sol: the order to do things in.
Retirement moves fail on sequencing, not on Spain. The same decisions in a different order can mean a five-figure tax difference, so before the removal van, get the map straight.
The one line that governs everything
Spend more than 183 days in Spain in a calendar year and you generally become Spanish tax resident, taxed there on worldwide income and gains. Nothing else on this page matters as much as which side of that line you are on in any given year, because it decides where your pension lump sum, the sale of an Irish asset, or investment income gets taxed.
The sequencing questions
Take the pension lump sum while still Irish tax resident or after becoming Spanish resident? The treatment differs, and the wrong order can turn a tax-free Irish lump sum into Spanish taxable income. Selling an Irish property to fund the move: same logic, the year of sale versus the year of residence change needs planning. Even the month you move matters, because tax residency is assessed per calendar year. None of this is exotic: it is a few hours with an adviser who knows both systems, taken before anything is irreversible.
The practical checklist
Residency registration as an EU citizen is straightforward (three months in, you register; no visa, no minimum income drama for Irish passports). Healthcare follows the stages in our healthcare guide, with the S1 form doing the heavy lifting once the Irish state pension starts. A Spanish will for the Spanish assets (our wills guide explains why). And keep an Irish foothold decision explicit: renting out the Irish house changes your tax picture in both countries.
Rent first, buy second
Heresy from people who sell property, but for full retirement moves we often suggest a winter's rental in the target town before buying. It tests the February question, the healthcare run, the distance from grandchildren, and it costs a fraction of a wrong purchase. Buyers who rented first buy better, in our experience, and regret less.
