Near the airport or near the beach: picking your compromise.

Here is a number that should shape your search more than any brochure: if you visit your Spanish home eight times a year for fifteen years, you will make that airport transfer 240 times. The difference between a 20-minute run and a 75-minute one is roughly nine full days of your life, plus every taxi fare or hire car that goes with it.

The travel-time map, honestly

From Málaga airport: Torremolinos 10 to 15 minutes, Benalmádena 15 to 20, Fuengirola 20 to 25 (all three also on the train line, which changes everything), Mijas Costa and La Cala 25 to 35, Málaga city 15 by train the other way, Marbella 35 to 45, Estepona 50 to 65, Nerja and the east 45 to 60. The train matters more than the minutes suggest: Torremolinos to Fuengirola means no car, no parking, no designated driver, for the whole life of the property.

What the far end buys you

Estepona and the east are not worse, they are different: more value per metre, more charm, less bustle, as our Estepona and Nerja guides cover. The question is usage. A twice-a-year fortnight family? The transfer is a rounding error, buy the place you love. A monthly long-weekend owner, or a future half-year retiree doing Irish trips home? The train line towns repay you every single visit.

The renter's version of the same rule
